Introduction
At our fabric re-use hub, we are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from Kvadrat. Their frequent donations of dead stock fabric from their Clerkenwell showroom have been invaluable to our various projects. These contributions help us uphold our shed values by encouraging people to learn new skills and emphasizing the benefits of the circular economy for the benefit of the environment. Fabulous fabric donations have also been received from Muirhead Leather, the Haines Collection and English Country Fabrics. All of these materials have gone in to setting up our fabric re-use hub.
Reviving Upholstery Projects
With the beautiful fabrics from our donors, our upholstery projects will be able to be done to a very high standard. What was once considered waste now transforms into stunning, functional pieces. It’s both gratifying and environmentally responsible to repurpose these high-quality materials, making our projects more sustainable and unique. Our community has been inspired to see how creatively fabric can be reused in our first rag rug course thanks in large part to Kvadrat's generosity in kicking off this first course in March 2024.
Empowering Through Sewing Classes and Rag Rug Making
The fabric donations have also enabled us to expand our sewing classes. Participants have a hands-on experience experimenting with high-quality textiles, learning new sewing techniques, and crafting their own items. These classes not only teach practical skills but also foster an appreciation for fabric re-use. By integrating these fabrics into our curriculum, we highlight the importance of sustainability and resourcefulness. Sewing together in a group is also great for growing confidence and promoting mental wellbeing and a sense of togetherness - what the shed is all about!
Promoting the Circular Economy
Reusing fabric aligns perfectly with our shed values and the principles of the circular economy. Rather than letting these textiles end up as waste, we reintegrate them into our activities, extending their life cycle and reducing waste. It’s a powerful demonstration of how resourcefulness and a commitment to sustainability can make a real difference. Kvadrat’s continual support helps us lead by example, showing that the circular economy is not just a concept but a tangible reality.
A Heartfelt Thank You
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Kvadrat for their continued fabric donations, and to Muirhead Leather, the Haines Collection and English Country Fabrics. Their support enables us to keep pushing forward with our sustainable initiatives, from upholstery projects to sewing classes. It’s an inspiring partnership that highlights the positive impact of sewing and making together using the circular economy and encourages creativity and sustainability within our community.
